How we protect your home before interior painting
A homeowner’s guide to floor protection, masking, surface preparation and a clear painting scope.
Preparation starts before the first coat
A finished paint job begins with decisions about the room, its contents and the surfaces being painted. Floors, counters, stairs, trim and nearby fixtures need protection suited to the work. The plan should also leave a safe route for the household and crew.
Renova discusses access and work areas before the project begins. Clients clear the agreed areas; moving or packing assistance can be discussed when needed. Identifying these responsibilities early avoids last-minute delays.
Cover the surfaces that stay
Floor coverings protect the areas used for painting and material handling. Plastic and tape help mask adjacent surfaces and cabinet openings when the scope calls for it. Protection should be appropriate for the surface so removal does not create avoidable damage.
A cabinet project needs its own preparation plan. Ask which components will be removed, which openings will be masked and how nearby counters, appliances and floors will be protected. Protection should be maintained while work is underway.
Prepare the wall before painting it
A fresh color cannot hide every surface defect. The scope may include cleaning, repairing drywall, sanding, matching texture and priming the prepared areas. Existing conditions and the chosen finish determine what preparation is necessary.
If a wall has signs of water damage, discuss the cause before finishing it. The moisture problem and affected materials need appropriate attention before cosmetic repairs proceed.
Define exactly what gets painted
Confirm whether the estimate includes walls, ceilings, doors, baseboards and other trim. Specify colors, sheen and the agreed paint products. For a patch, ask whether painting is limited to the repair or extends across a larger surface for a more consistent appearance.
Lighting and existing texture can make small differences noticeable. Reviewing the room together gives the contractor and homeowner a clearer understanding of the expected finish.
Review the finish and protection together
At the final walkthrough, inspect the agreed surfaces, edges and transitions under the room’s normal lighting. Note any outstanding touch-ups and confirm the cleanup included in the scope.
Renova House Services handles painting, drywall, texture and finish work throughout Greater Houston. Send photos of the rooms and describe the surfaces you want painted so we can discuss preparation and the complete project scope.
