Before engineered hardwood installation: a Houston homeowner checklist

Published

Plan product selection, subfloor checks, room access and transitions before your new engineered hardwood floor is installed.

Choose the exact product before planning the installation

A sample shows color and texture, but the product instructions explain where and how that flooring can be installed. Keep the brand, collection, item number and installation guide together. Ask which method is proposed for your rooms and whether the selected product is suitable for the existing subfloor.

Glue-down, floating and mechanically fastened systems have different requirements. The installation plan should follow the specific flooring, adhesive and underlayment instructions. Do not assume that another engineered wood product uses the same method simply because it looks similar.

Ask what needs checking beneath the old floor

Before installation, the subfloor needs to be evaluated for cleanliness, flatness, moisture and structural condition. For example, Bruce engineered hardwood instructions require appropriate moisture testing and documented results. A surface that looks dry is not enough to establish readiness.

Discuss what the initial estimate includes for removal and preparation. Some conditions can only be confirmed after the old flooring is lifted. Ask how the crew will document those findings and obtain approval for repairs or additional preparation before covering the surface.

Follow the product’s conditioning requirements

Wood flooring and the indoor environment need to be compatible. Ask how the installer will check room conditions and whether the selected product requires acclimation. A universal waiting period is not a useful substitute for the manufacturer’s directions and appropriate testing.

Bruce’s instructions for the engineered products linked below distinguish product storage from job-site readiness and require other wet construction work to be dry. Your chosen flooring may have different directions. Share plans for painting, drywall or other renovation work so the installation sequence can account for them.

Plan the edges as carefully as the open floor

Walk through doorways, closets, stairs and connections to adjacent tile or carpet. Discuss the direction of the boards, where transitions will land and whether baseboards will be removed and reinstalled or finished with additional trim. Include these decisions in the written scope.

Ask the installer to account for the product’s required movement space and doorway clearances. Review any height change at a transition before work begins. Photos of each edge and doorway are more useful for planning than a single picture of the middle of the room.

Make a room-access and contents plan

Agree on who will move furniture, disconnect appliances if needed and return belongings. Identify the route for materials and the space that must remain accessible during the project. Tell the team about pets, work-from-home needs and rooms you cannot temporarily give up.

Ask how adjacent finishes will be protected, where cutting will take place and what daily cleanup includes. At the end of the project, follow the flooring and adhesive instructions for traffic, furniture placement and care. The time before a room can be used depends on the selected installation system.

Send the information needed for a clear scope

Renova House Services provides engineered hardwood flooring and flooring replacement across Greater Houston. To start the discussion, send the project address, wide room photos, close-ups of transitions, the current flooring type and your selected product or preferred look.

We can discuss the existing conditions, removal and preparation, room transitions and how the work fits with surrounding finishes. Review the written scope before scheduling and keep the product’s installation and care information for the finished floor.
